Rules and how to play
Everything a new player needs before their first game: the modes, the gear that is mandatory, and the unwritten courtesies that keep it fun.
How to play
Gelball runs on a short list of rules and a large amount of good sportsmanship. Learn the modes, wear the right eye protection, follow the venue's chrono, and call your hits.
What you will play
Names vary field to field, but these are the modes run at Australian venues. Most sessions rotate through several in an afternoon.

Look for
Or
Many indoor and family venues require a full-face mask rated for gel ball or paintball plus enclosed shoes, mandatory at all times in the play area. At strict venues, taking your mask off in the play area means you are out for the session.

Set by the venue
There is no single national safe FPS. Each venue chronos blasters and sets its own cap. Expect roughly 250 to 300 FPS at most fields, sometimes higher for competition formats. Always follow the field's chrono result on the day, not a number from a forum.
Out of the box, most entry and mid electric blasters fire roughly 200 to 260 FPS. Spec Ops Paintball, for example, tiers by session: about 300 FPS on weekends, 330 FPS Friday nights, and up to 350 FPS for competition and speedball formats.
The rules that keep it safe
The heart of the game
Gelball runs on the honour system. There are no automatic sensors, so the game only works because players are honest.

Varies by venue
Minimum age is set by the venue. As examples, Gel City sets a minimum of 6, with 6 to 15 year olds accompanied by an adult guardian, and under-18s needing a parent or guardian waiver. Some fields set the floor at 8. Check the venue before you book.
Where you can legally own and use a blaster is a separate question
